Time2test recognises that offshore (outsourced) development is hugely beneficial if it’s done right.
Offshore development is great because it allows us to take advantage of the reduced cost of software development but a solely based offshore solution will not deliver you solutions. A senior developer in the UK may cost you 50,000 GBP per year but in India that developer could cost you 5,000 GBP per year but there are also disadvantages to consider.
Some of the disadvantages of a solely based offshore solution based on Time2Test’s experiences:
- Communication differences and cultural differences can add up to delayed software delivery and unexpected solutions.
- Business analysis from offshore is difficult to perform over the phone, email or chat.
- Written English is sometimes to a different standard and difficult to follow
- Offshore companies say they are working on your project but you may find that they are juggling numerous other work.
- Actual and expected delivery can vary hugely if there isn’t the regular project management to keep focus.
- Design quality is not as high as Western based design standards
- Project visibility sometimes comes too late in the project lifecycle and visibility is usually just developed code instead of visio process document, design documents or Proofs of concepts.
- Project organisation is occasionally very poor which means that there isn’t a centralised document or information resource.
- Design Usability is not naturally as high as Western standards
Time2Test based in the UK works with offshore software partners in India to develop software and perform detailed analysis and other software related activities while onshore performing the very important Project management and Business Analysis . Time2test acts as the bridge between the UK client and the offshore development partner to ensure that communications and workflow is at optimum levels to deliver. Time2test takes advantage of the reduced labour cost and fills in the “offshore gaps”.
